Gwilym Williams – Slate Artist
His slate craft represents a part of Wales
In February 1976 the love of painting turned into a full-time occupation for Gwilym Williams of Crefft Elidir. Born in a Welsh speaking slate quarrying community – (his father and Gwilyms three brothers worked in the Dinorwic Quarries) it is not surprising that Gwilym chose slate as the material on which to demonstrate his craft.
He began painting birds and wildlife and gradually widened his scope until today he paints a wide variety of subjects on anything from coasters to clocks. Gwilym chooses his own slate and prepares and splits it ready for use.
Carol his wife joined him in 1983 and together Gwilym & Carol run their slate craft business from their workshop in Padarn Country Parc, Llanberis, in the heartland of Snowdonia, North Wales.
His work enhances homes all over the world.
At their workshop in Padarn Parc Llanberis, Gwilym & Carol offer a wide selection of hand painted slate gifts and souvenirs with something to suit everyone’s taste. Gwilyms Slate Crafts are very popular with visitors and he is pleased to think, by virtue of his craft work, little pieces of Wales are finding their way into homes all over the world.
